• God’s power serves. Jesus was all-powerful but chose to be a servant. How can you be a servant?

“The last shall be first, and the first shall be last.” These words from Jesus are powerful because of how counter-cultural they are. So much of life requires us to be successful at the cost of others. We need to win games in sports to be successful. We need to outscore other people to get accepted into colleges. We need to outperform other musicians to get the highest accolades in recitals. In so many avenues of life, success comes from being first, and then Jesus says we need to be last. Last—not meaning we are losers—but last because with our autonomy, we choose to put others first. We don’t need to sacrifice what we love right away to serve others; it can start by helping a friend study, or sharing a meal with someone who forgot their lunch. Serving starts with caring for someone more than your own comfort. Success often involves comparison, but Jesus invites us to measure life differently.
