(Answer the question/s below in your app notes)

• How can you be more enthusiastic about serving God?

Have you ever seen the people in giant, suffocating costumes that stand on street corners and twirl signs around? Do you know what I’m talking about? The other day, I saw someone in an enormous, inflatable hot dog costume, dancing enthusiastically and spinning a sign for Roy’s Hot Dog Shop like he grew up a circus performer. It was 90 degrees that day. The temperature inside that hot dog must have been almost 100. Yet Mr. Hot Dog Costume Person continued to party like it was nothing.

I thought about the faceless person inside. Though the inflatable hot dog had a smiling face, I guessed the person inside wasn’t as animated as the costume portrayed. The whole scene perfectly demonstrated the phrase “Going through the motions.”

When we serve God, it is easy to go through the motions. It’s easy to put on our Christian costumes and do the dance we think will merit rewards. But Paul encourages us to “always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,” because authentic service is more sustainable than just going through the motions.
