The Israelites Escape From Egypt

Exodus 11:1-12:36

Sometimes mistakes happen, and sometimes things do not go as planned. That is part of learning and growing. This week, you will learn that Jesus offers grace and new beginnings. You are always welcomed, always loved, and always invited to try again. You will also discover that real freedom comes from knowing that God helps guide your growth and celebrates each step you take as you become who you were created to be.

PLANTING THE SEED

After many warnings, a final night of judgment came upon Egypt, affecting the firstborn sons of each family. God gave clear instructions so that all who listened, Israelite and Egyptian, would be protected. That night brought great sorrow, and Pharaoh finally told Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. About 600,000 men, along with their families and animals, left quickly, traveling together into freedom. God had kept His promise to set them free.

FREEDOM AND RESPONSIBILITY

Talk about how freedom comes with responsibility. Make a list of freedoms children and adults want, and then identify the responsibilities needed to keep those freedoms—this can help establish clear house rules. For example, children may play outside as long as they come home on time; if rules aren’t followed, freedoms may be limited for a while. Post the list somewhere visible to remind everyone that freedom and responsibility go hand in hand.

Think about how you can live this week in light of the fact that Jesus sets us free.

• Jesus sets us free from our sins. If you want to talk with someone about following Jesus or asking Jesus for freedom, ask a trusted adult to pray with you.

• Draw a picture of what you think it would look like to be set free by Jesus. Then write the Key Verse on your picture and hang it in a place you’ll see it to remember that Jesus sets us free.

• Write a story about what it’s like to be freed from sins and burdens. You can make it a creative story or a story about a time you knew Jesus had freed you from something.
