Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:45–50

- Why did David have so much courage?

- What do you need courage for?

I find it easier to have the courage to stand up for others than to have the courage to stand up for myself. If I knew my friend was in a toxic relationship, I would be quick to tell them that they need to get out of it, reminding them of their worth and telling them they need to be bold. If I needed to talk to their partner, I would easily speak up. But if I were in a toxic relationship and knew it, I would be pretty scared to do anything about it. I think David had courage because God revealed to him the bigger picture. David knew that others were suffering, and he knew his community was at risk, so he courageously stepped up. We can find courage in circumstances that are bigger than ourselves because the purpose gives us the energy to overcome them. I am learning that God also wants us to have the courage needed to take care of ourselves, to stand up for ourselves, because God loves us so much.
