The Israelites Worship a Golden Calf

Bible Point:

God is worthy of our worship.

Key Verse:

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:2-3).

Big Picture:

Recognize modern idols and intentionally choose to give God first place in your lives.

The Israelites Worship a Golden Calf

Exodus 32:1-26

This week we are exploring one big question: What are you building your life on? So many things compete for your attention, like media, image, achievement, relationships, money, and stuff. None of these can truly hold you up when life gets hard. It is easy to slowly give your deepest focus and strongest emotions to things that do not last. Throughout this week, you will be invited to refocus your mind and heart on the God who gives life and sustains it, and consider what it means to build your life on something steady and true.

DAILY CHALLENGE

Choose one or more of these Daily Challenges to do this week.

• Spend 10 minutes each day focusing on God through prayer and Bible reading.

• Choose one thing that you know distracts you from God (such as social media or shows), and turn it off this week.

• Memorize three Bible verses you can recite when you need to refocus on God.

FAITH JOURNAL

What stands in the way of giving God all your worship?

TALK WITH YOUR FAMILY

Read Isaiah 40:18-26 with your family, and discuss these questions:

• According to this Scripture, why is only God worthy of our worship?

• What shortcomings do idols made of gold and silver have?

• What about modern-day idols? What are they, and why can’t they compare to God?

Ask everyone in your family to turn off their phones, shut down their computers, turn off the TV, and eliminate any other distractions. Then spend 10 minutes together worshipping God in song, or just in prayers or praise.
