Isaac Marries Rebekah

Genesis 24

Finding God’s direction doesn’t take long prayers or a theological degree. Young children can pray for and receive direction from the Lord, even though their prayers may be short, choppy, spontaneous, or even silly. Use this lesson to encourage your children to ask God to guide them in their choices and walk with them every day.

BIBLE TIME!

Genesis 24 tells us that we can seek God for wisdom and direction. Abraham instructed his servant to find a wife for his son, Isaac. The servant prayed to God to allow the right woman to come to the well, and he prayed that he would know this was the woman if she got him some water and volunteered to give his 10 camels water, too. As you read with your child this week, focus on the ways we seek God’s direction in our lives—through prayer and listening to God’s Word. Remind your child that God has the answers, and we can ask him for wisdom.

KEY VERSE

Ask God for wisdom (adapted from James 1:5).

PLAY AND PRAY

It’s important for our children to see us seeking wisdom from God. Share with them choices that you might have to make. Then allow them to hear you pray, asking God to guide the direction of your decision. This will help your children see that everyone—including parents—has tough decisions to make, but that we can all rely on God’s wisdom for direction. Look for opportunities for your child to make choices of his or her own and to ask God for wisdom. Even simple choices, like whether to play inside or outside, can be prayed about.

ASK

•What are some choices you’ve made? What happened?

•How can God help you choose?

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

If you can, go to the local zoo and visit the camels. If you have a petting zoo in your area, you might ask if they would let you give the camels some water. Talk with your child about how strange it was that God showed the servant the right girl for Isaac through a bunch of camels! Talk about how God’s direction is sometimes not the easiest to find, but when we pray, we’ll know it’s the right direction in our hearts.

READY, SET, GROW!

This week, your child learned that we can pray to God. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to remember that he or she can seek God’s direction in life through prayer and listening to God’s Word. Help your child weave faith into life this week and follow through on the challenge!

•Ask your mom or dad to pray with you when you have a tough or important decision to make.

•Draw a picture to remind you that God listens to you when you pray. Put the picture where you see it every day, and every time you see it thank God for listening to you and caring for you.
