Proverbs 3:5-8

Have you ever found it difficult to figure out just how you are supposed to not trust in your own understanding? After all, isn’t “not trusting in our own understanding” an “understanding” that we come to? Does it mean that trusting in God is somehow supposed to be irrational? Perhaps you know of people who have pursued that line of reasoning only to embrace some rather unfortunate perspectives!

So, as you reflect on today’s passage, it is helpful to remember that what we are being invited to do is trust in God and God’s goodness even when things are not going well. It is not an invitation to sloppy or dangerous thinking, but rather one of confident trust that staying committed to trusting God and the values of God’s kingdom is what makes the most sense, even when it may not seem like it. Taking the path of selfishness or following evil impulses, even when it seems compelling to do so, does not lead to good outcomes. Being “practical” when it comes at the expense of harm or devaluing others is an example of what it means to lean on our own understanding, rather than embracing God’s understanding and living like Jesus.

• What are some examples of “our own understanding” that might lead us to turn away from the way God invites us to treat others?

• In what ways have you experienced your path becoming “straight” once you have decided to live in a way that Jesus invites you to, rather than giving in to the perspectives around you that might lead you differently?

• What do you find the most challenging when it comes to applying this passage to your own life?

• Where do you sense that God might be inviting you to trust in him with your whole heart?

Take a few moments to share with God what is on your heart as you reflect on this passage today.
