JESUS GIVES THE BEATITUDES

Jesus Gives the Beatitudes

Matthew 5:1-12


You live in a world where people talk a lot about power, money, and how someone looks. Even if you don’t believe those things are the most important, you still hear those messages all the time.


This week, you will learn that God’s way is different. It might even feel “upside down” compared to what the world says matters, but God’s way leads to real peace and a forever kind of life.


As you learn, keep your eyes open for the things God cares about. You can choose to follow those values, even when the world tries to pull you in another direction. Each step you take helps your faith grow stronger.


GROWING IN TRUTH


PLANTING THE SEED

Everyone had gathered around the Teacher, wondering what He had to say—probably hoping He would lead the Israelites in victory over the Romans. “Maybe He’ll tell us how to strike them down,” some must have thought. “Blessed are those who mourn,” Jesus said. “Blessed are those who are persecuted.” “Excuse me? Maybe I heard you wrong. We’ve had enough mourning and enough persecution. After all, we’re living like slaves under the Roman leaders.” But Jesus continued. His words must have been so shocking yet so refreshing: “Be meek. Be humble. Be pure. Show mercy.” Jesus turned the world upside down in the famous teaching that’s often called the Beatitudes. He showed the world that God cares about our hearts more than our abilities. Jesus challenged everything most people feel is important and encouraged them to go after and hold on to the things of God.

FAMILY FUN

Designate an area or room in your house where people can go to understand God’s ways. Consider placing a Bible opened to Matthew 5:1-12 in the area. Family members will agree to go to that spot this week to rethink how to choose God’s way. Agree with your family to use Philippians 4:8 as a filter for everything you watch, listen to, or read. For example, as you’re watching TV, ask, “Is this program true, right, pure, and lovely? According to Philippians 4:8, do you think we should watch it? Why or why not?”
