Jesus is Born

Luke 2:1–20 | Hebrews 1:1–4

It can be hard to get away from all the shopping and ads that come with Christmas. This month, you’ve probably seen and heard so many commercials telling you about things you “need.” But not everything people say we need is really a need; sometimes it’s just a want.

This week, we learn about the greatest gift of Christmas. It’s not something you can buy in a store. God gave us the one thing we truly need: a Savior. Jesus came so we could be close to God forever. That’s the best gift ever.

GROWING IN TRUTH

PLANTING THE SEED

Caesar Augustus wanted a census taken. So, Joseph and Mary had to go to Bethlehem to register. Mary was about to have a baby any day, and she and Joseph needed a place to stay. But, every inn was filled. Where would they stay? The only place available was a stable. And that’s where Jesus was born. Mary wrapped him in cloth and laid him in a manger.

Meanwhile, out in a field, an angel appeared to some shepherds. The angel told the shepherds about Jesus’ birth and that He was the Savior who had been promised. The shepherds hurried to find Jesus, and when they did, they were very excited! They ran to tell everyone they could. They went back to their fields glorifying and praising God.

KEY VERSE

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’” (John 14:6).

SING THE GOOD NEWS!

Make up your own Christmas song about why Jesus’ birth is important to you. You don’t have to play an instrument or even sing well. You could even make up words to sing to a familiar Christmas song, such as “Away in a Manger,” “The First Noel,” or “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Just praise and glorify God as the shepherds did on the night of Jesus’ birth!

Ask Your Family:

• Why was Jesus born?

• What does Jesus’ birth mean to you?

• Why do we need a Savior?

READY, SET, GROW!

Today, children committed to one of the following Daily Challenges. Help your child grow in faith this week and follow through on their challenge!

• TELL a friend why Jesus was born.

• MAKE a list of the people you know who don’t understand why Jesus was born. Pray for each of these people this week, asking God to help them understand who Jesus is.

• MAKE a Christmas ornament for someone you may not know very well, such as the mail carrier or your school principal. When you give the ornament away, explain why Jesus was born.
