God Protects Moses
Exodus 1:1-2:10
Most of your 5- and 6-year-olds have experienced fear from various experiences such as thunderstorms or other life situations. And they’re reliant on others’ protection in their daily lives. Use this lesson to help kids understand that God can, and is, protecting them in those times they’re afraid.
BIBLE TIME!
The Bible (Exodus 1:1–2:10) tells us that God protects us. Egypt’s new Pharaoh had forgotten about Joseph and how he had helped the Egyptians. All Joseph’s people, the Israelites, were now enslaved to the Egyptians. When the Israelites began to outnumber the Egyptians, Pharaoh made a plan to have all the baby boys taken away. When Moses’ family learned of this evil plan, they hid Moses by making a basket, placing Moses in it, and setting it in the Nile River. As Moses’ sister watched close by, Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby, hired Moses’ mother to care for him, and then later raised Moses as her son—Pharaoh’s grandson. Your child learned that God protected Moses and that God protects us!
KEY VERSE
Do everything for God (adapted from Colossians 3:23).
BIBLE POINT
God protects us.
PLAY AND PRAY
Re-enact the watery scene of God protecting baby Moses. Fill the tub with water, and let your child float a plastic toy boat or plastic container on the water. As your child sails the boat back and forth on the bathtub “river,” make waves and obstacles so your child has to protect the boat as it sails. After talking about God protecting Moses, talk about how God protects your family.
ASK
• What was it like to protect the boat as it sailed along?
• How does God protect us?
FAITHFUL FLAVORS
Your child will enjoy making “Moses-on-the-Water” for a snack this week. Remind your child to wash his or her hands before you begin. Bring out a cup of yogurt, and have your child squeeze about five drops of blue food coloring into it. Let him or her carefully stir the yogurt mixture, adding more food coloring if a darker blue is desired. Place a vanilla wafer on top of the yogurt “Nile” to represent a basket. Place stick pretzels on the inside edges of the cup to represent reeds growing on the riverbanks. Then let your child place a graham cracker bear on the wafer to represent baby Moses in the basket. Pray together, thanking God for protecting you both as he protected Moses. Eat and enjoy!
READY, SET, GROW!
This week, your child learned that God protects us. He or she committed to one of the following challenges to remember that he or she can trust God to protect him or her. Help your child weave faith into life this week and follow through on the challenge!
1. Sing a praise song to God in thanks for his protection anytime you feel afraid.
2. With help from one of your parents, write a letter to your local police or fire station. Thank them for letting God use them to protect you every day.
3. Go for a walk with your parents and talk about the things you see along the way that help keep you safe. Pray as you walk and thank God for providing those things.
