MONDAY
Colossians 4:6
• What’s one way you can “season” your talk today?
“These fries aren’t salty enough,” I mutter, thoroughly regretting accepting the suggestion to eat at the questioningly-revered West Coast apex of dining: In-N-Out.
“I know,” Cassie sympathizes. “But Californians will defend this place ‘til the day they die.” We roll our eyes in agreement as the rest of the group launches into the rich promise of the restaurant, scorning our critique and debating fast food fries. Cassie reaches into her purse, retrieving two small, white rectangles. She slides one across the sticky table to me like we’re conducting some sort of deal. “Here.” She winks at me, knowingly.
At this moment, I remember a quirky fun fact about my girl Cassie. She carries around salt packets in her purse, precisely for emergencies like these.
It’s memories like these that inform my understanding of the words in Colossians: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt.” Salt makes everything better. It gives formless waste a purpose. It keeps things fresh. It improves.
Today, let your words improve others’ lives.
