Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:1-18
Living with courage, or being encouraged, is not always easy. When things are not going well and the circumstances that surround us are difficult, hurtful, and discouraging, being encouraged can be challenging. The good news is, however, that even when we find ourselves immersed in such times, the things in which our courage is grounded, God’s love and grace, remain steadfast and sure. This is not just a matter of wishful thinking, but of remaining grounded in what is ultimately real. As you read and reflect on today’s passage, listen to how Paul shares about how we can navigate such times.
• To what extent do you find your sense of peace and assurance grounded in what is happening around you or to you, rather than what you know to be true within you?
• What kinds of things are helpful to you in staying focused in the midst of challenging times?
• In what ways can you be a source of support and encouragement to others when they are facing tough times?
• What is the difference between trying to minimize or deny the tough things we or others are experiencing and walking with them as they go through whatever it is they are facing? What does encouragement look like in either case? Which do you find the most helpful?
• How would you explain what Paul means in verse 16 when he says, “Therefore we do not lose heart”?
• Take a few moments to continue prayerfully reflecting on this passage, noticing the parts that seem to speak to you with particular significance, and talking with God in prayer about what you are finding there.
