Daniel 3:16–18
- How can you remain brave even when in danger?
When I worked at summer camp, I spent many late nights in the office. I was the programming director, and the biggest hours of my day were after the evening program and before the morning one (hence the late nights).
The biggest problem with this system was that I have always been massively afraid of the dark. After my first few nights of working alone, I realized something had to change. The agonizing long walk back to my cabin gave me so much anxiety that I almost called 911. And, in my defense, it was creepy! The entire camp was dead silent; the only ones awake were the cougars and coyotes. I hated it.
It occurred to me on one of these terrifying walks back to my room that I had an assistant—an assistant who, I knew, was more than capable and willing to help with whatever I needed. My assistant was also conveniently a 6’4" man. I’d sent him to bed the few nights I’d been working in the office because I felt bad about keeping him up.
But when he offered to stay up the next night and help, I took him up on it, and we walked back to the cabins together. A miraculous thing happened on that walk: I wasn’t afraid anymore! I was perfectly at ease! What changed? I wasn’t alone.
In the same way, we are never alone. God is right beside us wherever we go, whatever we do. Remember that the next time you are afraid. God promises to always be with us.
