1 John 1:8-9

(Answer the question/s below in your app notes)

• What sins do you need to confess to God?

Being chronically online, you learn words like “delulu.” And being a lover of fun words, I instantly added this one to my lexicon. “Delulu,” or delusional, is a term you probably don’t want to be called. Feeling delusional is like the panicked feeling of coming to class and realizing you had a paper due that everyone knew about, but you forgot.

The Greek word for “confess” is homologeo, a combination of two root words: “homo,” which means “the same,” and “logos,” which comes from a root meaning “word.” Put together, the term literally translates to “saying the same words.” The biblical idea of confession, then, is less about admitting an insidious secret and more about recalibrating with God. It’s almost like confessing is just agreeing with God that what we’ve done is wrong: I agree, God, that was not right.

This definition deconstructed also means that refusing to confess to God is the same thing as living in denial: What I did was justified! Of course, when we live our lives like this, we live in spiritual delusion. We’re delulu.

Confession, taking accountability and recalibrating with God’s moral compass, is not only the right thing to do; it’s the truest thing we can do. When we refuse to confess, we’re living lives of lies and delusion.

How can you recalibrate with God today?
