Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13

Contrary to popular belief, 1 Corinthians 13 is not a chapter that is just dropped into Scripture to give us some great wedding material (although it is that). Rather, 1 Corinthians 13 is part of the conversation that we were having in 1 Corinthians 12, as we discussed the Body of Christ. It is, in fact, the chapter that provides the ultimate perspective on what the whole Body of Christ metaphor is all about. While chapter 13 can be read on its own, chapter 12 should never be read without following it up with chapter 13. Today, you are invited to take a few moments to consider why that is by reflecting on what Paul says in chapter 13, in the wake of chapter 12. As you read and reflect on the passage today, here are a few things to consider:

• What significance do spiritual gifts (or knowledge or faith, for that matter) have if we do not have this central core quality that chapter 13 is talking about? Why do you think that is?

• What do you think about how the core of our walk with Jesus is described as ways we relate to each other, rather than what we know or what we can do?

• Some of the previous passages we were in this week touched on the idea of maturity. How does this passage clarify what actual maturity is?

• What do you find the most challenging/disturbing/exciting/motivating about what you read here?

• Take a few moments to respond to God in prayer about what this passage stirs in your heart.
