God Protects Moses

Exodus 1:1-2:10

As you get older, you start to notice more about the world around you. Sometimes that brings questions or worries about things like danger, loss, or people not getting along. It is normal to feel unsure about these things.

This week you will learn that God’s love is steady and strong in every situation. God is always with you and offers protection, comfort, and peace, even when life feels confusing or scary.

The goal of this week is to help you feel safe and confident in God’s care. Nothing you face can separate you from the love God has for you.

PLANTING THE SEED

“Baby pulled from the Nile!” What a headline this might have been had there been a Hebrew newspaper back in Moses’ day. The new king of Egypt hated and feared the Israelites. He enslaved them and treated them very badly. He also came up with a plan to make sure the Hebrews didn’t have families. Pharaoh ordered that all the Hebrew baby boys be killed. And when that didn’t work, he tried to have them thrown into the Nile River. But when Moses was born, God protected Moses! God even allowed Pharaoh’s own daughter to be the one to find Moses. She likely never imagined she would choose to adopt Moses as her own! And then, as if that weren’t enough, Moses’ very own mother was hired to nurse him for Pharaoh’s daughter. Imagine that! Moses’ mom got paid to take care of her own son. God is a great protector!

KEY VERSE

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

FAMILY FUN

Join together in a bubble relay to learn more about God’s protection. Get a bottle of bubble solution and a bubble wand, and try to blow a bubble all the way through your house or all the way around the house. Arrange yourselves all around your home. Begin by blowing a bubble from the bottle of bubble solution, and then gently blow on the bubble to try to keep it “alive” and move it around the house to the next family member. If the bubble bursts, stop and blow another bubble and again begin to move it around your home by blowing on the bubble. When you’ve reached the next family member, hand off the wand, bubble, and bubble solution so that person can continue. If the bubble pops, have the next family member blow a new bubble. When you’ve finished, bring everyone together to discuss the following questions:

• What did you do to protect those bubbles and gently guide them around our home?

• How is this like the way God protects and guides us?

• How can we as family members protect one another from harm?

READY, SET, GROW!

Choose a way you’ll place your trust in God for protection this week.

• Draw a picture of a time you needed God’s protection. Then write “God is my refuge” in your picture.

• Write in a journal or diary about ways you’ve seen God protect you in the past. When you’re scared or worried about something, read what you wrote to help you remember that God protects you.

• Tell a younger friend or sibling about how God protects you.
