Jesus Talks With the Samaritan Woman

John 4:5-42

This week, we will learn how to show kindness, empathy, and compassion. As we go through these devotionals, we can notice others who may feel left out and practice including everyone, helping create a place where everyone feels welcomed and valued.

PLANTING THE SEED

Jesus knew the woman at the well before a single word was spoken. The meeting itself was surprising; she was a Samaritan, and Jews and Samaritans rarely spoke with one another. Yet Jesus chose to begin a conversation anyway. As they talked, Jesus showed a deep understanding of her life and experiences. Instead of judgment, the conversation opened the door to something greater. Jesus spoke about “living water,” a gift that brings lasting life and hope. The woman recognized that this message was something special. Filled with excitement, she went back to her town and told others about the encounter. Many people came to see and hear Jesus for themselves. After listening to what Jesus said, many in the town believed as well. Through one conversation at a well, a whole community was invited to experience hope.

FAMILY FUN:

This week, be on the lookout for every source of water you can find. For example, when you see an irrigation ditch, rain falling, a waterfall, a stream, or a sprinkler, the first one in the family who sees it calls out, “Water sighting!” The other family members will respond by saying, “Jesus is living water!”
