Matthew 28:16-20
Final instructions. What comes to mind when you hear that phrase? Most of us probably anticipate something pretty significant, as these are the last bits of communication we are going to get before we move on to whatever comes next. Because of this, these are usually things we tune into and give our special attention. Today’s passage records some of the final instructions that Jesus leaves with us. Matthew first reminds us about who “us” is—a community that includes those responding in worship and sometimes struggling with doubts. This is not a collection of super saints, but rather normal people who are responding to Jesus’ invitation to come. Then, in these final words, we hear Jesus (who reminds us that he is now the final authority for everything) inviting us, in our going, to share the gospel with everyone, everywhere. He invites us to make disciples as we figuratively and literally immerse others in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit, teaching them what Jesus has taught us, and then ending with a profound promise and statement of assurance. As you take a few moments to thoughtfully reflect on these verses, consider the following:
• How do you feel about the community of people that Jesus spoke these final words to being made of real people who both worshiped and doubted, but still were seeking to follow Jesus?
• How does the final promise that Jesus will always be with us to the very end help shape the way we make disciples and immerse them in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit as we share with them what Jesus said? In what way is this different from if we saw the promise of God’s presence being separate from how God invites us to live and serve?
• To what extent do you live in the awareness that Jesus is indeed with you—always—until the very end? What, if anything, would you like to do differently in regard to this?
Take a few moments to share with God in prayer what is on your heart as you reflect on this passage today.
