God Protects Moses
Exodus 1:1-2:10
Many fifth- and sixth-graders do not always feel safe or secure. We see news about violence and harm happening to young people around the world, and it can make you wonder if something could happen to you too. These thoughts are normal at your age, but they can also feel heavy. This week you will learn that God does not promise to remove every hard or dangerous situation. Instead, God promises to be with you and protect you in the middle of whatever you face. God’s presence brings strength, comfort, and peace even when life feels uncertain. This study will help you understand that you are never alone. God’s love surrounds you and holds you steady in every moment.
PLANTING THE SEED
In Exodus 1:1-2:10, the Israelites had lived as slaves in Egypt for 400 years! Finally, the time had come for God to deliver them, so God chose to raise up a man to lead Israel to freedom. His name was Moses. And it seemed that the Egyptians were against him from the moment he was born.
Pharaoh (Egypt’s king) had commanded that all baby boys born to enslaved people be slaughtered. To save his life, Moses’ mother placed Moses in a floating basket and sent him down the river. No one could have imagined who would find the young boy—none other than Pharaoh’s daughter. She took pity on the child and sent for an enslaved woman to take care of him. And no one could have imagined which slave woman would be called in for the task— none other than Moses’ real mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter actually paid her to take care of Moses! Imagine! Getting paid to take care of your own son!
FAMILY FUN
To celebrate God’s protection in our lives, each of you can keep track of different times you see God protecting you this week. Choose a time to get together and share what’s happened in each of your lives. Ask someone to write everything down, and then pray together, thanking God for protecting your family.
READY, SET, GROW!
Choose a way you’ll trust God for protection in your life this week.
• Draw a picture of something you’re afraid of or nervous about. Write the words of Psalm 46:1 at the bottom of it. Put this reminder somewhere you’ll see it and remember that God will protect you in that situation.
• Whenever you feel like you need God’s protection, read from any of these Psalms: Psalm 3, 12, 37, 42, or 91. Remember what God did in the passages you read, and remember that God’s with you today.
• Take your index card from the “God Protects You” Sabbath School activity. Keep this card with you this week, and look at it when you’re afraid or worried about something.
