Q4 Week 5
Bible Point: Serve God.
Key Verse: “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).
Big Picture: Children will learn to use their gifts to serve God.
Bible Story:
In this week’s Bible passage (1 Corinthians 12:4- 27), Paul taught the Corinthians that God gives all Christians different gifts. The gifts are diverse, but they are unified because they come from the same God. There are many different gifts, but the same God is working through all of them. And they all are for a common purpose: the good of the church. Paul says our gifts are like different parts of the body: Every gift is different, but all the gifts are equally important, and they all work together so the body can perform. Each Christian is a part of the body of Christ, and God wants us to use the gifts we have been given to fill the place intended for us in the church!
Play and Pray:
Give your child several index cards and one crayon. Encourage your child to use the crayon to draw on one index card. Then, take the crayon from your child, and give a different crayon in return. Have your child draw on another index card with the new crayon. Repeat this several times with different colored crayons. Then, give your child a whole box of crayons and a big sheet of paper. Encourage your child to use all the different colors to draw a picture. As your child draws the picture, remind your child that, just as each crayon is very different, God gives each of us different gifts. Using lots of different colors makes a picture beautiful and fun to look at. It is the same way with the church. God gives each of us different gifts so that together, we can make a beautiful church.
ASK
• What was it like to have only one crayon? • How was it different to color with lots of crayons?
• What are some gifts that God gives people? • How can we use those gifts to serve God and to help others know more about Jesus’ love?
Faithful Flavors
Follow your favorite recipe to make cupcakes with your child. Let your child add each ingredient one at a time. Help your child understand that each ingredient in the recipe is different and important. Without even one of the ingredients, the cupcakes wouldn’t turn out right! As you stir the mixture, show your child how each individual ingredient disappears and mixes with the others; together, all the ingredients make something different and special. Remind your child that God gives each of us different and important gifts. All our gifts mixed together make a wonderful and special church. Without even one person, the church wouldn’t be right! When your child isn’t looking, hide a different kind of small piece of candy or other treat inside each unbaked cupcake. When your child eats the cupcakes and discovers the surprises, remind him or her that just as each cupcake has something different and special hidden inside, each of us has a different gift that God has given us.
ASK
• What do you think you are good at?
• How can you use that special gift to help others?
Ready, Set, Grow!
This week, your child learned that God gives us different gifts to help us serve God and others. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to use a gift to serve others. Help your child follow through on the challenge!
• PRAY for someone you love. Ask God to take care of that person and help that person.
• GIVE the gift of helping to each person in your family this week!
• MAKE a nice card or color a pretty picture for your pastor or another person at church.
