God meets our needs.

Big Picture

God provides.

Jesus Feeds Thousands

John 6:1-15

Sometimes a want can feel so big that it feels like a need. At the same time, we are learning about what we truly need, like food, safety, and people who care for us. This week, we will explore the difference between wants and needs and learn that God provides everything we truly need. As you go through these devotionals, notice how God cares for you and let that help you to grow in gratitude.

PLANTING THE SEED

The crowd followed Jesus all day. They listened, learned, and watched Him heal people. As the hours passed, their stomachs began to growl. There were thousands of people and almost no food. The disciples saw a problem. How could they feed everyone? A boy offered what he had, five small loaves of bread and two fish. It did not seem like enough. But Jesus thanked God and began to share the food. Soon everyone had eaten as much as they wanted, and there were even leftovers. Sometimes our needs feel too big. We wonder if we will have enough time, strength, or help. This story reminds us that Jesus sees what we need and provides more than we expect.

KEY VERSE

(Use whichever you’re emphasizing that week— John 6:11 works beautifully.)

ASK YOUR FAMILY:

• Sit down with your family members to talk about the difference between needs and wants. Create a list of five questions to ask to decide whether something a family member wants is worth the money—“Will I still want this in two years?” and “Will this help me at school or work?” for example.

• Have an “I Don’t Need It!” cleaning. Ask everyone in the family to spend a few hours one day going through all their belongings and choosing at least one item to give away. Go together to donate the items to people who need them.

• Create a blessing jar for this week. Each time a family member sees how God meets a need, they will write it on a slip of paper and put it in the jar.

READY, SET, GROW!

This week students committed to doing something to show others they can count on God to meet their needs. Help your child weave faith into life this week and follow through on this commitment!
