SCRIPTURE: Matthew 26:47-54; Luke 22:47-53

Leadership is sometimes mistaken for the ability to get your way and appear to win at any cost. But that is a shallow understanding of both leadership and victory. In today’s passages, we see that neither the forces opposing Jesus nor even his own friends understood that what looked like a win for evil could not prevent the victory Jesus secured by remaining faithful to who he was and what he had come to do. He remained clothed in the armor of God.

In the brief exchange between the disciple who drew his sword and the servant whose ear was cut off, we see two very different visions of power. Jesus makes it clear that violence is not the way of his Kingdom, even as he heals the wounded servant. Had he chosen to establish his reign by force, many would have rallied behind him. But that was not the nature of his mission. Instead, he stood his ground and refused to engage on their terms, even when it cost him personally. In doing so, he modeled what many today would call nonviolent resistance.

The only sword we are invited to take up in our struggle with evil is what Paul calls the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Jesus himself is the Word made flesh. To stand as Jesus stood is to wield that sword.

As you reflect on today’s passages, consider the following:

• How do you understand Jesus’ statement, “All who draw the sword will die by the sword”? Do you think he is speaking only about physical violence, or about a broader principle of how we engage conflict?

• When you compare this moment with Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:38–42, what common principles do you notice? How do they reshape our understanding of strength and justice?

• Beyond physical violence, what insights do these passages offer for how we handle interpersonal conflict? What might it look like to respond in a way that reflects the character of God rather than mirroring the behavior of others?

• What do you find most encouraging, most challenging, or most unsettling in this passage?

• As you reflect on all of this, what picture of God comes into sharper focus for you?
