God Gives the Ten Commandments (Part 1)

Exodus 19:16–20:21

Props: Small flashlight (for lightning), soft drum or container to tap (for thunder), blue scarf (“sky”), feather, toy bird (optional)

Say: God’s people came to a big mountain called Mount Sinai. The mountain was tall. Very tall. Lift your arms high.

Say: Jesus made tall mountains. He made hills and valleys. He made every high place. Turn on flashlight briefly and shine it on the ceiling.

Say: There was thunder. There was lightning. The mountain shook! Gently tap drum or container.

Say: The people felt small. They felt quiet. They knew something important was happening. Spread the blue scarf like the sky.

Say: Jesus made the sky above the mountain. He made birds fly high in the sky. Hold up the feather or toy bird.

Say: Birds fly high. But God is higher than everything. Higher than the birds. Higher than the mountain. God wanted to speak to people. God loved them very much. God wanted to help them know how to live. Pat your heart.

Say: God gave them special words. Good words. Loving words. God said, “Put Me first.” God said, “Be kind.” God said, “Tell the truth.” (Simple summaries appropriate for Beginners.) These words help us love God. These words help us love people. Hold child gently.

Say: The same Jesus who made birds sing, the same Jesus who filled the sea with fish, is the Jesus who teaches us how to live. Pat child’s chest softly.

Say: Jesus loves me, Jesus guides me, Jesus helps me choose what is good. Let’s say that together: “Jesus helps me choose what is good!”
