SCRIPTURE: Revelation 22:17

“Are we there yet?” How often have parents heard that refrain from their younger passengers as they journey on toward their destination, wondering if whatever discomfort they’re experiencing on the way is ever going to finally resolve into the joy and satisfaction of reaching their ultimate destination? As we get older and wiser, we begin to realize that the trip itself is not just something we endure to where we’re going—it can be a rich and meaningful experience in itself! And yet, there is something about the anticipation involved in reaching our final destination that clearly adds to the richness of the experience. Of course, the arrival itself is a reason for celebration. In his portrayal of both the journey and the destination in the book of Revelation, John alludes to the shared journey, the glorious destination, and the invitation that is extended to us to join in. In the midst of his description, we once again find the powerful imagery of hunger being replaced with fullness, and thirst with satisfaction. Take a few moments to enjoy the imagery that John shares in today’s passages, and respond to the invitation of the Spirit and the bride. As you do so, consider the following:

• What parts of this imagery speak to you the most powerfully as you reflect on the experience of those described, and your own?

• What are the things in your own life that you most look forward to experiencing that final restoration and healing?

• To what extent do you experience the voice of the “Spirit” and the “bride” (the bride being an image of the church) saying “come” to you in ways that seem genuinely invitational and welcoming? To what extent do you think others hear them speaking in that way? If you or they hear some other sentiment, what can you do to help ensure that we are hearing clearly and correctly?

• If you were to fully embrace the invitation of this passage, how would things feel different to you this week?
