Colossians 4:2-6 (NIV)

Last Sabbath, one of the images that we reflected on to describe how we are present in the world was that of salt—a seasoning and a preservative. So, how is it that followers of Jesus enhance the flavor of the places in which we find ourselves, or help to preserve things that would otherwise spoil? It is an interesting image. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul explores this imagery a bit as he asks the believers there to pray for him so that he can proclaim the “mystery of Christ,” the God who chose to embody love and grace in a powerful way. If you have not done so already, take a few moments to read through today’s passage and reflect on what Paul is saying. Notice that he wants to be able to proclaim that good news clearly, and then goes on to describe what it looks like to live in harmony with that clear picture. He suggests that we: 1) Be wise in how we act toward others; 2) Make good use of our opportunities; and 3) Keep our conversations full of grace. This is how we “season” our interactions with each other. Being gracious by reflecting God’s graciousness is the seasoning that we bring to our interactions with each other that helps us proclaim Jesus with clarity. When that focus is lacking, things get murky. As you reflect on today’s passage, especially in light of Jesus’ invitation to be salt and light, consider the following:

• What does it look like for my conversations with people around me to be full of grace, allowing that to season all my interactions?

• As I think about all the various ways I interact with people, how many of those are seasoned with grace? What are some of the other “seasonings” that are sometimes flavoring my interactions with others?

• Where are the places and/or situations I am facing today where I can alter the seasoning to reflect a wiser, more gracious stance than one that makes the character of God less clear?

• What do I sense God may be inviting me to consider or do in response to today’s passage?

Take a few moments to share with God what is on your heart in prayer.
