• How does this verse relate to respect?

This verse is probably one of the most backwards concepts in the society we live in. Imagine if we were told that if you wanted to be accepted into your dream school, you needed to have the worst grades. We would be in complete disbelief. Jesus is not speaking to the competitive society we live in—that to achieve more, we have to produce more—he is talking about the way we treat the people around us. If we want to be first, we need to serve others. If everyone followed this, everyone would be first, experiencing what it means to be cared for as they care for others. If we want to be respected, we should give respect to others. If we want to be loved, we should love others. What we put out into the world is often what we can end up receiving.
