SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 4:1-13

As we have been noticing, whether we are crafting sanctuaries in the Middle Eastern desert, serving refreshments at Mary and Martha’s house, or building churches wherever we find ourselves today, how we are living and understanding what we are doing is central to what we hope to accomplish. As Chuck Miller, a treasured pastor, mentor, and friend, often reminded me, “We need to be the people of God before we do the work of God.” Who we are speaks more powerfully than any skill we may possess.

Today’s Scripture passage is another place where we see this assumption beneath Paul’s description of how gifts and abilities function within the church. As you reflect on Paul’s description of the Body of Christ, notice how this theme emerges:

• Before Paul lists the gifts we may share, how does he describe what is shaping us into the kind of people we are called to be? What do you notice in these first ten verses?

• How does Paul describe the way our various gifts and talents are meant to impact the church?

• What does this “mature” Christian community look like in the way it interacts with the larger community around it?

• As you reflect on these verses, what draws your attention most strongly? What invitation do you sense God extending to you?
