Luke 1:11-14; 26-31; 2:8-14

So far this week, we’ve noticed how fear is often a part of the equation in our relationship with God during times when we are struggling with things that haven’t gone well for us, or when we unexpectedly sense God’s presence powerfully. The passages today, however, reflect how fear is often also an element in our lives, even when good things are happening! Zechariah and Elizabeth are going to have a son! Mary is invited to be a part of something amazing (OK, that would be pretty overwhelming, but still . . .)! And shepherds are given a message of good news of great joy for all people! Interestingly enough, each of these moments that are occasions for celebration is also a moment that is marked by an initial response of fear when an angel shows up to share the good news. Whenever God shows up in an unexpected way, our initial reaction is still one of fear. It is also worth noting that God appears to be very aware of this. It is not simply a coincidence that one of the first things that is said in all of these encounters is some version of, “It’s OK. You don’t have to be afraid. My presence here is a good thing.” As you take a few moments to consider the responses of the various people in these passages to the very good news that was being shared with them, here are a few things to think about:

• Which of the experiences described in these passages can you relate to, or are drawn to, the most? Why is that?

• In what ways do you find yourself responding in fear or anxiousness to the more challenging things in your life? To what extent are you able to hear God saying to you, “Don’t be afraid”?

• In what ways do you find yourself responding in fear even to joyful parts of your life at times? To what extent are you able to hear God saying to you, “Don’t be afraid”?

• What is it about the way we think about God that results in us being afraid during those times? What do you think God most wants you to hear and feel during those times?

• How does 1 John 4:18 apply to your reflections today? (There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.)

Take a few moments to share what is on your mind and heart with God in prayer.
