Peter and Andrew Meet Jesus

John 1:35-42

Five- and six-year-olds enjoy social interaction within their family as well as at school and church. They’re beginning to interact cooperatively with their peers in games, in dramatic play, and in working together on classroom projects. Use this lesson to encourage children to use their social skills to help them begin or grow their friendship with Jesus!

PLANTING THE SEED

BIBLE TIME!

This week’s Scripture (John 1:35-42) tells us that Andrew met Jesus and chose to follow Him. After Andrew had talked with Jesus, he ran to get his brother so that Simon Peter could get to know Jesus and be his friend, too. Andrew brought Peter to Jesus, and they both followed Jesus. Jesus is our friend, and we can follow him, too!

KEY VERSE

If we believe in Jesus, we become God’s children (adapted from John 1:12).

BIBLE POINT

Jesus is our friend.

PLAY AND PRAY

Establish a Bible story time with your child when you can read about Jesus and get to know more about him as your friend. Read about Jesus from a children’s Bible.

ASK

• What did the story tell us about Jesus?

• Who can we tell about the good news of Jesus?

• What can we do to help family members and friends get to know Jesus better?

FAITHFUL FLAVORS

Help your child make these chocolate roses, and take the treats to special family members and friends.

Help your child melt a 12-ounce package of chocolate chips in a pan on the stove or in a microwavable glass bowl. After the chocolate has melted, let it cool for a minute or two. Then have your child carefully stir in 4 cups of corn flakes. Drop the mixture by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Place the mounds of chocolate roses in the refrigerator until they become firm.

ASK

• Who can we give our chocolate roses to?

• What can we tell people about Jesus?

Then tell your child, “Let’s take these roses to the special people we talked about. We can show those people that we love them and that Jesus loves them, too!”

AGE-LEVEL INSIGHT

Five- and six-year-olds enjoy social interaction within the family as well as at school and church. They’re beginning to interact cooperatively with their peers in games, in dramatic play, and in working together on classroom projects. Use this lesson to help your child use his or her social skills to let family and friends know that Jesus is our friend!

READY, SET, GROW!

This week, your child learned that Jesus is our friend. He or she committed to one of the following challenges to become friends with Jesus. Help your child grow in faith this week and follow through on the challenge!

• Ask your parents if you can invite your pastor or teacher over for dinner. Share with each other things you’ve learned about Jesus.

• Draw a picture for Jesus and hang it in your room. When you see it, remember that you can have a friendship with Jesus.

• Ask your mom or dad to take you to the library and help you find stories about Jesus.
