Who Is My Neighbor?
In the previous two studies, we explored our assumptions about who has access to carry the gospel. Through Nicodemus, we saw that position, status, and religious authority do not qualify a person to understand or share God’s message. Through the Samaritan woman, we saw that gender, circumstance, and personal history do not disqualify someone from participating in God’s work.
In the story of the Good Samaritan, we encounter this theme once again. Here, Jesus challenges the meaning of being a good neighbor through themes of race and position. This story moves beyond the question of who can carry the gospel to who actually embodies it.
