Matthew 11:1-19

Most of us, if we were writing the story, would have preferred that this section be written differently. Even as we accept that we live in a world where evil and tragedy too often gain footholds and innocents suffer in horrible ways, we like it better when angels direct God’s people to safe places, and they are spared. It is hard to accept the reality that, because we live in a world impacted by evil, not even God’s people are immune to the wrong choices that others make. Following where God leads does not always mean everything happens the way we would prefer, but it does mean that we can live faithfully with integrity, assurance, and hope, even when the cost is high. We know who has the final word in our stories, and even if some of the chapters are difficult to get through, the central storyline remains intact, and the conclusion is amazing!

• What are some of the ways that you notice people (or you yourself) struggling with what we sometimes describe as “bad things happening to good people”?

• In addition to the suffering itself, what other concerns can be troubling?

• What insights, encouragement, or hope do you find as you reflect on this passage? What questions or concerns still linger for you?

• How do you sense Jesus was feeling as he shared his own thoughts about John and what had taken place?

As you take a few moments to be in prayer, share with God what is on your heart regarding your reflections on this passage, and perhaps for others you may come to find are experiencing similar times or issues.
