Psalm 23

When it comes to being reminded of God’s presence, guidance, and disposition toward us in the midst of everything, few passages are as well-known and loved as today’s. David had certainly lived through more than his fair share of triumph and devastating loss, and yet in the midst of it all, this has become the anthem of his life and of those who have also—quite imperfectly at times—sought to follow God’s leading. Take a few moments to read it through and reflect on the imagery that is shared.

• To what extent do you live in the awareness that God is indeed your shepherd and that in this, you have all you need?

• To what extent do you allow God to give you places of rest, renewal, and restoration in the places you need it most?

• To what extent are you able to set fear and anxiety aside, even in dark places, because you know that God goes with you even there?

• In what ways have you become aware of God’s protection (rod) or guidance (staff) as you reflect on your experience?

• In what ways are you, or would you like to be, more aware of how God affirms and celebrates you even when you are in the midst of forces that seem arrayed against you?

• To what extent are you aware that God’s goodness and mercy have been and are pursuing you all the days of your life?

• Are you living with a sense of assurance that you are eternally embraced and safe in God’s hands?

Enjoy some time prayerfully reflecting on the passage as you share with God in prayer.
