JESUS NOTICES A WIDOW'S GIVING
Mark 12:41-44
Your 5- and 6-year-olds are sometimes the most generous people on the planet. Other times, though, they want to be first in line, have the most choices, or get to take the last snack. Just like people of all ages, kids this age can struggle with giving. That’s why the example of the widow who gave so much is important for kids to learn about. As they see how she gave so much when she had so little, they’ll grow in their ability to give as well. Use this lesson to help children learn to give to God.
PLANTING THE SEED
BIBLE TIME
This week’s Bible passage (Mark 12:41-44) tells us that God wants us to give. Children learned of a poor woman who gave her best to Jesus. One day, Jesus and the disciples were in the Temple watching people give their money. The rich people gave lots and lots of money, but the poor woman gave her last two coins. Your child learned that God loved her gift because God knew how much she sacrificed, yet she happily gave.
KEY VERSE
“Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:11).
PLAY AND PRAY
Spend some time with your child making a special card for his or her Sabbath School teacher. Have your child use white paper and paint pens or markers. At the top of the page, help your child write, “Thanks for giving to God and me!” Then have your child draw a picture of himself or herself. Your child could trace coins around the picture’s border and use silver or gold paint to decorate the coins.
ASK
• What do you like best about your teacher?
• What do you think your teacher does to give to God?
• What can you do to give to God?
FAITHFUL FLAVORS
Make “snack coins” with your child as a reminder of this week’s Bible passage. Help your child peel a banana and slice it into coin shapes with a plastic knife. Let your child dip the banana coins into honey before eating them. As you enjoy your snack together, review the Bible passage of the poor woman who gave her best to God, and remember how sweet it is to give your best.
