Ephesians 3:12

• What could you be talking about to God with confidence?

In Sheryl Sandberg’s famous book Lean In, she reports a troubling statistic: while men will apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, women will exclusively only apply if they meet 100%. This is troubling for obvious reasons: why is there such a disparity between genders in their perception of the term “qualified”? Why are men chronically more confident in the workplace than women?

There are hoards of sociologists who are clamoring to answer these questions and offer practical solutions to decrease disparities like these. Regardless of your gender, confidence is a difficult trait to master. This is true today, and it was true in the first century when Paul was writing the Ephesians. How can we be confident as imperfect people approaching a perfect God? But Paul urges us not only to approach God, he insists that we come boldly and confidently.
