READ: Psalm 16:1-2

(Answer the question/s below in your app notes)

• How can God’s past goodness be a comfort when you consider what the future holds?

The rumble within sports fandom was palpable across the nation. The New England Patriots were about to become the second team in NFL history to ever complete a perfect season. The Super Bowl stadium was vibrating with energy. Tom Brady, a Hall-of-Fame quarterback who had changed the game of football forever, confidently approached the field to face the New York Giants. Everyone had bet on the Patriots. After all, they had won 16 games in the regular season. What was one more? They had done this before.

Except they couldn’t close out the season with a Super Bowl win. The Patriots lost to the Giants in a stunning defeat of 17-14.

There’s security in a strong record of victories, isn’t there? Sports or otherwise, proving you can do something once gives great confidence in future attempts. Biblical authors often praise God for past miracles, protection, or victories. Unlike us, in our imperfect, splotchy records of success like the New England Patriots in 2007, God’s past record promises victory in both the present and future.
