READ: Psalm 91:1-16

(Answer the question/s below in your app notes)

• Why can a Christian be calm, even in the midst of chaos and turmoil?

Recently, I read a memoir from an American politician who ran for president. In the book, she described the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the presidential debates. These debates were notorious for interruptions, harsh criticisms, and even mean-spirited sneers.

Despite these debates feeling like a mix of the Real Housewives and The Hunger Games, the American public sees it as a massive red flag if any of the candidates appear rattled or anxious in any way. Their numbers in the polls will assuredly pay the price of their apparent nerves. I don’t often find myself feeling sorry for American politicians, but this is one circumstance that always feels particularly unwinnable.

Psalm 91 describes the chaotic wickedness of the world that can and will affect us at some point in our lives. Yet the author intentionally notes that with God, the chaos feels tamer. We have the luxury of being calm in turmoil because we know the God who reigns above it all. It does not mean that we are apathetic to the suffering and tragedy of the world, but that we have a bigger perspective that extends beyond the present moment.
