Q4 Week 7
Bible Point: Listen to God.
Key Verse: "The Holy Spirit will teach you (adapted from John 14:26)."
Big Picture: Children will learn to listen to God.
Note to Parents:
Children understand that prayer is talking to God. They trust that God is there and can hear them when they
pray, but they may not understand that God wants to speak to them and that they can listen to God. Use this lesson to help them understand that God speaks to them in many ways and that, if they listen, they will hear God.
Bible Story:
As you read Acts 8:26-40 to your child this week, point out how Philip and the Ethiopian both listened to God. Philip listened to God and obeyed by going down the desert road. The Ethiopian listened to God and obeyed by reading God’s Word, having it explained to him, and being baptized. Both men loved and trusted God, so they listened to and obeyed God. Remind your child that we can listen to God, as Philip and the Ethiopian did.
Play and Pray:
To help your child become a better listener, play this listening game. Read the Bible to your child. Then read the same verse but leave out one of the important events. Ask your child to fill in the missing part. Read it again, leaving out something else, and ask your listener to tell you what’s missing. Soon, your child will be telling you what God said. Remind your child that each time we read and hear God’s Word, we are listening to God.
Outdoor Adventures:
Go outdoors with your child during the week to sit quietly and listen to all the sounds. Encourage your child to pay close attention to man-made sounds (such as cars and trains) and God-made sounds (such as animals, people, and birds). Mention that one way we can listen to God is by listening to the sounds God has made for us to hear.
Ready, Set, Grow!
This week, your child learned that we can listen to God. Your child committed to one of the following challenges to practice listening to God. Help your child grow in faith this week and follow through on the challenge!
• LISTEN to a song about God, and tell your parents why you want to listen to and follow God’s instructions.
• PRACTICE listening and following God by praying and asking God to help you listen and follow God’s instructions.
