Proverbs 11:14

• What does this verse tell you about how God guides leaders of nations?

When I was in third grade, my elementary school held a poll event when John Kerry was running for president against George W. Bush in the 2004 U.S. election. We surveyed all the students, asking them to each fill out a “ballot.” The votes were tallied. We’d elected George W. Bush. Apparently, we represented the feelings of America well, as Bush won the 2004 presidential election in real life.

Years later, as a sophomore in college, it was time for me to actually fill out a ballot. I was stressed for weeks. It felt like there were no good options–a sentiment that I heard over and over within my friend group, family, community, and online. What had happened to politics? I heard commentators lament on TV. How did we end up here?

No matter which party you typically vote for, a lot of people seem to share this feeling: that the government is struggling each year, each election, each decade. In Proverbs 11, an interesting piece of wisdom is shared: For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
