Her whole life, Ruby had been told that she’d receive a car one day. “If you get good grades, stay out of trouble, and grow into a woman of integrity, we’ll get you a car when you turn 21,” her mom promised her. Year after year, Ruby faithfully studied so that her report card would come back squeaky clean. She worked hard to be a diligent student, not only in academics, but in leadership and character as well. Her junior year of high school, she ran for student body secretary, and her senior year she ran for class president. She was committed to her character as well, always supporting and rallying around her friends and family and regularly volunteering to show up for her community. She did all this in preparation for the promise–something that was planned long ago. The Bible says that God has “done wonderful things, things planned long ago.” Just like Ruby, we often spend our lives moving toward promises we can’t fully see yet. But while Ruby’s promise depended on her effort, God’s promises don’t. God’s plans don’t hinge on our perfection; they rest on God’s faithfulness. Ruby waited and worked for a gift she hoped would come one day, but God is already giving us gifts we didn’t even know to prepare for.
