PART 2

When Ruby was 18, her family fell on hard times. Her mom lost her job, and her parents had to downsize their home just to keep up with the mortgage. Ruby, just having graduated from high school, offered to skip college and take a waitressing job at the local burger joint to help support the family, but her parents wouldn’t hear of it. When her birthday finally came around, Ruby had long forgotten (or maybe simply let go of) the promise of a new car. After everything her family had suffered that year, the last thing she wanted was for them to feel guilty about not being able to fulfill a promise made in easier days. But as she walked into the house for her birthday dinner, she noticed a small package waiting for her. Inside was a tiny sky-blue Hot Wheels car, and attached to it was a note that read, “A promise is a promise.” Her parents couldn’t give her the car they once imagined, but they wanted her to know they hadn’t forgotten, and they hadn’t stopped loving her. When God promises something, God will always follow through. And unlike us, God’s follow-through is never smaller, never symbolic, never a compromise born out of limitation. God never underdelivers. God only fulfills in ways bigger, truer, and better than we knew to expect.
