(Answer the question/s below in your app notes)
• What makes the truth in these verses matter to you?
How would you interpret this verse? “This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood.”
Write down your thoughts. Make two lists: “Water” and “Blood.” Then, jot down ways that Jesus’ life was connected to water. Then do the same with blood. This verse suggests an interesting dichotomy of Jesus: He is both our Savior and our sacrifice. The Bible makes a point of recording Jesus’ baptism. In this way, Jesus was publicly stating that he belonged to God. Jesus began his ministry with a dedication to his purpose.
And eventually, that purpose was the cross. Jesus knew that his time on earth would also be marked with blood, sacrifice, and suffering. Despite this knowledge, Jesus still chose to be baptized. Jesus still chose the path he knew would save the world.
Water and blood. Purpose and passion. This verse reminds us that Jesus’ life was marked by both symbolic acts and real, tangible sacrifice. Water can remind us of his baptism, obedience, and the spiritual cleansing he offers to all who believe, Blood represents the cost of our salvation, the suffering he endured, and the profound love that fuels his mission. Together, they remind us that salvation is both gift and sacrifice, hope and cost, mercy and victory.
