Jacob Deceives Esau and Isaac
Genesis 25:27-32; 27:1-40
Being honest can feel risky, especially when it might affect your social standing or friendships. Sometimes there’s an unspoken rule to stay quiet or keep things to yourself. But there are moments when breaking that “code of silence” is not only okay, it’s important; especially when it means talking with a trusted adult. This study will help you think through the difference between being honest and betraying someone’s confidence, and how to know when honesty matters most.
DAILY CHALLENGE
Choose one or more of these Daily Challenges to do this week.
• Are you being honest with God? Journal throughout the week and share your raw, honest feelings with God.
• If you struggle with being honest with your parents or an older sibling, cousin, or mentor, be honest. Tell them who you’re hanging out with, where you’re going, and what you’re doing.
FAITH JOURNAL
How would a 100% commitment to honesty change your life for the better?
TALK WITH YOUR FAMILY
Read Proverbs 13:6 with your family, and discuss these questions:
• How do you think righteousness guards the person of integrity? How does wickedness overthrow the sinner?
• Why is it worth the effort to be honest and live righteously?
• Why do you think God values honesty and integrity so much?
• What one thing can you do this week to be a person of even greater honesty and integrity?
Watch a situation comedy together, and note all the forms of lying and deception used by the characters. Discuss whether these forms of deception are acceptable, why it’s important to do right even if you end up losing, and the damage dishonesty causes in relationships. Close the discussion by having family members name the character they most do not want to be like.
