• How can you be a part of helping God “secure justice for the poor and uphold the cause of the needy”?
Lauryn was the kind of kid who always wanted to do the right thing. In first grade, her teacher even told her parents, “Lauryn has a strong sense of justice.” One day during a school assembly, the treasurer told the students, “If you ever find money on campus, bring it to the office right away so we can return it to its rightful owner.” Lauryn took this assignment very seriously. A few weeks later at recess, she spotted something shining near the classroom door. Money. Her moment had arrived. She carefully picked it up, asked her teacher for a hall pass, and marched to the office feeling proud that she could help make things right. “Mrs. Swetnam,” Lauryn said seriously, “I found some money, and I remembered what you said at assembly.” Mrs. Swetnam smiled kindly. “Thank you, Lauryn. You can leave it here, and we’ll keep it safe in case someone comes looking for it.” Lauryn nodded solemnly, placed the money on the desk, and walked out feeling like she had done something important. The moment Lauryn left, Mrs. Swetnam looked down at the “treasure” on her desk: two pennies shining under the fluorescent lights.
It’s a funny story, and it’s also a beautiful one. Lauryn cared about doing what was right, even when the amount seemed small. Sometimes we think justice only matters in huge situations, but often it starts in small everyday moments: standing up for someone, being honest, including others, or helping someone in need.
Psalm 140 reminds us that God cares deeply about justice and about people who are hurting or overlooked. And when we choose kindness, honesty, and compassion—even in small ways— we reflect God’s heart to the people around us.
