Happy vocabulary week! This week, we’re going to learn a new word each day that connects to our Bible passage for the day. Today, our word is dubious.

Dubious: fraught with uncertainty or doubt

In other words: scary, sus, or untrustworthy

Used in a sentence: The excuse sounded dubious, because it changed every time the teacher asked a question.

In Psalm 3, David begins with a dubious tone: Lord, my enemies are endless! They’re all taunting me and making me feel like I’ll fail! Do you ever feel like this in your faith? That your enemies surround you and there’s no way that you’ll survive?

The good news is, King David felt the exact same way, many times! The other good news is that our feelings, though important clues to us, are not always true. Just because you feel like God won’t come through for you, doesn’t make that true. The opposite is actually true: God is with us and is a shield for us against danger and harm. God is familiar with dubious situations: Jonah in the belly of a whale, Joseph being enslaved, Esther facing the genocide of her people. And God knows how to protect us against these perilous threats. So when life feels dubious—when the situation looks scary, confusing, or impossible—remember this: feelings can be loud, but God is louder. David didn’t pretend the danger wasn’t real, but David also chose to trust who God is.
