Every week during football season, I open up a little blue app where I pick which teams I think are going to win. I’m not exactly an NFL expert, so the tiny percentages next to each team really help. They show what most fans think will happen.

If I’m being honest…I usually just pick whoever the majority favors.

The Bible actually talks about doing something similar with people. In James 2, James asks readers to imagine how they’d treat a rich person wearing fancy clothes compared to a poor person wearing worn-out ones. It’s uncomfortable, but relatable.

We often give more attention, kindness, or respect to people who seem impressive: the popular kids, the ones who dress well, sound confident, or seem important. Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re doing it.

Just like those percentages in my app, our minds can quietly assign value to people: who matters more, who’s worth our time, who we want to be around.

But God doesn’t play favorites. And God calls us to treat everyone with equal love and respect.
