• It’s important to serve Jesus, but what’s the most important thing we do for him?

Two friends sat on opposite ends of a couch after school. Mattie scrolled on her phone while Ava stared at the wall. “Are you even listening?” Ava finally asked. Mattie looked up. “Of course I am! I helped you with your math homework. I saved you a seat at lunch. I shared my notes when you were sick. I—”

Ava softened. “And I really appreciate that,” she said. “But doing stuff for me isn’t the same as just spending time with me.” Mattie blinked. Ava continued, “Sometimes I just want you to put your phone down and actually talk to me.”

Doing things for people is good. It’s one way we show we care. But being present, really present, is something different. Martha in the Bible struggled with something similar. She was busy doing important work for Jesus. And the work mattered! But while she was rushing around, her sister Mary chose to sit with Jesus and listen.

Jesus gently reminded Martha that being with him mattered more than being busy for him. It’s easy to stay busy, even doing good things. But Jesus knows something about us: we need rest. We need unhurried time. We need moments where we’re not multitasking, not distracted, not performing: just present.

Worship isn’t only about what we do for God. It’s also about being with him.
