Jesus Talks With the Samaritan Woman
John 4:5-42
The teenage years can include changing friendships, feeling left out, and sometimes being judged for things like what we wear or what we like. Many of us know what it feels like to be on the outside, and even when we seem included, we can still feel unseen or unaccepted. This week, we will explore how Jesus responds to people who feel left out and what it means to be fully known and loved. As we go through these devotionals, we can remember that when others reject us, Jesus offers a love that does not change.
DAILY CHALLENGE
Choose one or more of these Daily Challenges to do this week.
• Spend some time this week just sitting with Jesus. Talk to him about your concerns, but also just sit still and let him pour his love over you.
• Whenever you drink water this week, be aware of it. Don’t just drink it while you do other things—pause to recognize the water flow through you. As you do, let it remind you of Jesus filling you with his love.
• Ask God who he’d specifically like you to show his love to. Consider the “outcast” of your school or neighborhood. Write down that person’s name or a description of that person. Then ask God to help you show Jesus’ love to that person this week.
FAITH JOURNAL
In what ways are you a different person because of Jesus’ love?
TALK WITH YOUR FAMILY
With your family, read John 15:1-13. Jesus used many analogies to describe himself to his followers. In this passage, he compared his life-giving properties with those of a vine supporting its branches. If you’re comfortable, underline or highlight the word “love” in your Bible each time it appears in these verses. Then discuss the following questions with your family:
• What needs does Jesus meet that can’t be met by anyone or anything else?
• How can you stay rooted and connected to Jesus’ love?
• How would you describe your relationship with Jesus?
Work together to find various household items that could serve as other analogies describing Christ’s person and work in our lives. For instance, “Jesus is like a baseball bat, and I am like a baseball. Without his strength behind me, I wouldn’t go very far, but with him I can really fly!” Or, “Jesus is like a can opener; I’m like a can of fruit. Jesus brings out the best in me!”
