Big Picture

Commit daily to love others intentionally and selflessly.

Jesus Tells About the Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25-37

It is easy to think of love as just a feeling, but real love shows up in choices. Sometimes that looks like doing what is right, even when it is hard, or accepting guidance that helps us grow. This week, we will explore what it means to choose love in real life. As we go through these devotionals, we will see how boundaries, discipline, and love are all connected and how they can shape who we are becoming.

DAILY CHALLENGE

• What one thing did you commit to from your “What If?” handout? Make that commitment a reality this week.

• Come up with one random act of loving kindness you’ll commit to do this week for a family member, teacher, friend, or neighbor—either anonymously or not— that you won’t get paid for. Sweep a sidewalk or driveway, clean out a garage, mow a yard, write an uplifting note, babysit, cook and serve a meal, take over any household chores for someone else—think of it, then do it!

• Keep your eyes out for people in need this week. Be a Good Samaritan to them.

FAITH JOURNAL

How have you seen the results of loving others as yourself?

TALK WITH YOUR FAMILY

With your family, read 1 John 3:16-18 and discuss the following questions:

• What’s your response to this passage? Why?

• What does it mean to “lay down our lives for our brothers,” and how does this apply to our family?

• Why does God connect a lack of love for the needy (“sees his brother in need but has no pity on him”) with the absence of God’s love (“how can the love of God be in him?”)?

• What one thing could we do as a family to choose to be more loving toward one another? Toward the needy?

Consider simple ways your family can act on the answers you shared to the last question.
