JESUS GIVES THE BEATITUDES

Jesus Gives the Beatitudes

Matthew 5:1-12


It can be tough to talk about living out the Beatitudes in Junior High, especially when you’re trying to f igure out who you are and want to be noticed or appreciated. Each Beatitude describes something that goes against what the world usually celebrates. Most people don’t cheer for humility or purity. But this week’s study will help you see that the real reward doesn’t come from your friends’ approval. The true blessing comes from God, and that’s worth far more than any kind of popularity or praise.


TRY THIS

As a family, read the Beatitudes together. For each one, think of a person you all know who reminds you of that Beatitude. Have family members pick out one they would most like to try to live out. Discuss which Beatitudes apply specifically to family life.


READY, SET, GROW!

• COMMIT to an entire day of doing everything—chores, schoolwork, relationships with parents, siblings, friends, and teachers—with the kind of love and compassion Jesus calls us to. If you catch yourself slipping, correct yourself and start over. Reflect on your actions and attitudes.


• TAKE a “fast” from all media for a day, or even all week. Use your newfound spare time to pray, read God’s Word, or help family or friends. After your fast has concluded, think about how it felt to give those things up temporarily and what changes you may want to make in the future as a result.


• FIND a church or social organization in town that could use your help, and get involved. Ask your parents’ permission before volunteering.
