Psalm 46:10
• How can spending time in quietness with God, meditating on his goodness, help you strengthen your relationship with him?
There must be a dozen thriller movies in which the protagonist, when approaching a quiet place, looks around, narrows their eyes, and says with a suspicious tone, “It’s quiet. Too quiet.” You know what I’m talking about, right? This is typically when the monster jumps out of nowhere, and a long sequence of life-threatening stunt work is performed. And it all starts with that corny line: It’s quiet…too quiet.
Sometimes, I feel this way in my devotional life. The Bible says to “Be still,” yet when I take the time to quiet my mind and clear my thoughts so God can speak, it feels… too quiet.
I think we live in a world diametrically opposed to quiet. The news is constantly vying for viewers. Social media begs for our likes and engagement. Popularity seems to consistently be tied to whoever is the loudest, the prettiest, or both. There’s no time to be still. To be quiet. And yet, being quiet is often what God asks of us. In Psalm 46:10, God asks us to “Be still and know that I am God.” Will you commit to the quiet stillness?
